There are many ways to manage stress, but this useful tool from Triad allows you to take control over your stress on a daily basis. In their article they describe the sequence of A+B=C. Where A stands for the Activating event, this is things like losing your car keys, traffic, an angry boss, a missed deadline. This is anything that you could PERCEIVE as stressful.
B stands for Belief, this is how you interpret the event that happened in A.
C stands for Consequence, this is what you would feel as result from A+B. This is where some people misconstrue the outcome, they think that A=C when they, in fact, forget about the middle factor, B. Some may immediately think they are stressed, irritated, or frustrated when the scenarios in A happen. When actually, you can change your Beliefs and therefore control your stress.
It is easy to overgeneralize and put negative thoughts into our heads and cause the unnecessary stress. This is saying things like “this traffic is going to take forever”, or “I have the worst boss in the world”.
On closer examination you will almost always find that your thinking at B is convoluted, muddled, overly exaggerated or simply untrue. You can start saying to yourself: “I couldn’t possibly have the worlds worst boss”, or “This traffic jam will not LITERALLY take forever”. Rational thinking and controlling your behavior to a situation can really have an impact on your stress management.
